Colt World Series day four recap

Fans at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette, Indiana witnessed two highly competitive elimination games Monday evening at the Colt World Series. Beginning with the early game between North Zone Champion Bay County, Michigan and South Zone Champion Crowley, Louisiana, fans almost saw Crowley come back from 7-2 down in the bottom of the seventh. In the late game, Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Seoul, Korea's trio of pitchers were just a bit better than Los Mochis, Mexico's Erick Valenzuela, as all four pitchers combined to pitch a gem. After the victories, Bay County advanced to take on West Zone Champion Upland, California Tuesday, and Seoul saw it's title hopes stay alive to battle European Zone Champion Netherlands Tuesday.

Consolation Game: Oranjestad, Aruba 12 Greensboro, North Carolina 9

In a high-scoring affair that included 11 combined errors, Caribbean Zone Champion Oranjestad, Aruba outlasted East Zone Champion Greensboro, North Carolina in the Consolation Game Monday afternoon at the Colt World Series 12-9. Thanks to a seven-run top of the fifth inning, Oranjestad was able to build a 12-3 lead that it never surrendered.

Aruba got on the board first in the top of the first inning, as Raibiently Mercalina and Brandon Sint Jagohe game led off the game with walks. Mercalina scored on an error during Jerrick Francees' at-bat, and Francees knocked in Brandon Sint Jago on a single up the middle. Francees later scored on a wild pitch. Emirson Cornelis hit a triple and he later scored on a passed ball, completing the scoring for the inning, as Oranjestad held a 4-0 lead.

The Caribbean Zone Champion's starting pitcher Bryan Sahid was solid through the first three innings of the game. He only allowed one hit and one walk, as Greensboro was held scoreless. Francees added another run for Aruba in the top of the third, when he stole home to make it 4-0.

Greensboro finally responded in the bottom of the fourth, when Charles Neese blasted a solo home run to left field. Isiah Hairston scored on a wild pitch and Isiah Williams-Rhem later recorded an RBI single through the left side to cut the deficit to 5-3 Aruba.

Oranjestad took control of the game in the top of the fifth, when the first eight hitters of the inning all reached base by way of five hits, an error and a walk. A double play and a groundout ended the rally for Greensboro, but when the inning was all said and done, the East Zone Champions trailed 12-3 late in the game.

Greensboro would not concede defeat. In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles put two runners aboard for Justin Brady to knock them both in on his double to right field. Brady scored on Nathan Cantor's sacrifice fly, cutting the Oranjestad lead to 12-6. Greensboro made one last run at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, when three hits, two walks, a hit batsman and an Aruba error cut the lead to 12-9 with the bases loaded an one out. Unfortunately for the North Carolinians, their upset came up just short, as their next two batters struck out and grounded out to end the game.

Francees, Cornelis and Reigene Eduarda combined to for seven hits, six runs scored and three RBI for Oranjestad. Caden Darnell and Isiah Williams-Rhem both had three hits for Greensboro. Brady paced the team with three RBI.

Game #13 Bay County, Michigan 7 Crowley, Louisiana 5

Despite a seventh inning surge by South Zone Champion Crowley, Louisiana, North Zone Champion Bay County, Michigan's defense held and the team came through with a 7-5 win in an elimination Game #14 of the Colt World Series Monday evening.

Bay County got its offense in motion right away, as Garrett Glysz drew a walk to open the inning and advanced to second on Carson Kwapiszewski’s sacrifice bunt. John Dorman followed with single to center, moving Glysz to third. Cooper Kauffold came up with the RBI when he hit a sharp grounder to second, and Nicholas Zeman’s only play was to first, allowing Glysz to come home with the game’s opening run (1-0 Bay County).

Bay County’s offense exploded in the bottom of the third, when the team scored six runs and really broke the game open. Glysz got them started yet again with an infield single to short. Kwapiszewski laid down another sacrifice bunt, and Dorman followed with a sharp single to center. Kauffold then drew a walk, and the bases were loaded with no one out. Mason Schumacher singled to center, bringing home Glysz and moving the Bay County lead to 2-0. Branden Brown followed with a single of his own, and the lead was 3-0.

Nick Birdsall continued the hit parade with an infield single to short to extend the lead to 4-0. Jacob Morse came through with yet another single, scoring Schumacher, and Brown came home when Crowley catcher Austyn Benoit tried to catch Brown off guard at third, yet, instead threw the ball away, making the score 6-0. Alec Prokopenko drew a walk and Glysz followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Birdsall, and Bay County led 7-0 after the third inning.

Crowley was able to generate an immediate response in the top of the fourth, as Benoit drew a leadoff walk, and Hunter Wriborg followed with a double to deep center, scoring Benoit and closing the gap to 7-1. After back-to-back flyouts, Landon Lafleur singled to right, allowing Wriborg to score, making the score 7-2 after four innings.

Branden Brown threw four solid innings in his second start of the series for Bay County, as he gave up just two runs and got the win, pushing his record to 2-0 in the tournament.

Crowley went to the bottom of the seventh needing at least five runs to keep its tournament dreams alive, as Kamran Richard led off the inning with a single to right. Wyatt Verret followed with another single, putting runners at first and second with no one out. Jacob Bernard came through for his team when he came to the plate and launched a triple off the wall in right center, scoring both Richard and Verret, narrowing the deficit to 7-4.

Zeman then singled to right, scoring Bernard and cutting the lead to 7-5, and bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of the batter Benoit. Bay County then made a smart pitching change by going to Schumacher. Schumacher was able to induce a pop out by Benoit to short, and Glysz made the heads up play to throw over to first and catch Zeman sleeping for an incredible double play. A routine fly out to right ended the game, as Bay County held on for a 7-5 win to survive and advance.

With the win, Bay County will take on West Zone Champion Upland, California today at 5 p.m. After the loss, Crowley was eliminated from the tournament.

Game #14 Seoul, Korea 3 Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico 0

In a hotly contested win or go home matchup that was dominated by pitching, Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Seoul, Korea knocked off Mexico Zone Champion Los Mochis, Sinaloa 3-0 Monday night in Game #14 of the Colt World Series.

Korean pitchers Lee Gyu Min, Lee Jong Min, and Ahn Hyo Sang combined to post a shutout and only gave up two hits in a fantastic combined performance. Despite the team's loss, Los Mochis' reliever Erick Valenzuela was sensational also, pitching a complete game (seven innings), allowing one unearned run on three hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Seoul got its offense going in the top of the first, when Kim Tae Ho drew a walk, to start the inning, off Los Mochis starter Luis Ayala. Kim Han Byul followed with a single to right. Ho advanced to third on the single and scored on a wild pitch, giving Korea an early 1-0 lead. After No Jee Woo and Jang Ye Jun drew back-to-back walks, Los Mochis turned to Valenzuela to pitch. Na Seung Yeup hit a sacrifice fly to add another run and extend the lead to 2-0 at the end of the first.

Seoul was able to add another run in the top of the fourth after Kwon Oh Ryun reached on an infield single with one out. Yun Jae Yeong followed with a single to right and both runners moved up an extra 90 feet when Rigoberto Borbolla mishandled the ball in right field. Kim Tae Ho grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Ryun was gunned down at home by second baseman Rosario Melecio to keep the score at 2-0. However, Kim Tae Ho intentionally got in a rundown between first and second, allowing Yeong to come home easily and stretch the lead to 3-0.

Korea’s pitching dominated the game and never let the Los Mochis hitters get into a groove offensively. Only six Los Mochis batters reached base and only two advanced into scoring position, as both Lee Gyu Min and Lee Jong Min used good off-speed and breaking pitches to keep Mexico off the base paths.

With the win, Seoul, Korea advances to the semifinals Tuesday to play Netherlands at 7:30 p.m. After the loss, Los Mochis has been eliminated from the tournament.
